Employee Free Speech and the Workplace
Management, Unions and employees are all encountering a more vocal world and workplace. Whether its social media posts, participation in protests, or activism in social justice movements, the relationship between speech and the workplace can be complex. Many employees are unaware of the limits of free speech in the workplace. Employers may also struggle with when, how and if they should attempt the regulate speech in and out of the workplace. Attorneys Gabe Jiran and Eric Chester will offer some insight on this timely topic from both the management and labor perspectives.
Gabriel Jiran is Chair of Shipman & Goodwin’s Employer Defense and Labor Relations Practice Group. Gabriel practices labor and employment law on behalf of corporations and public employers. He assists employers in addressing the full spectrum of issues associated with the employment relationship. He negotiates collective bargaining agreements, and frequently represents employers before administrative agencies and courts in labor disputes. Gabriel also litigates employment disputes on behalf of employers, including discrimination claims based on age, disability, race, national origin, gender, sexual harassment, and workers’ compensation retaliation.
Eric Chester represents a number of teacher unions, firefighter unions, state employee unions and healthcare unions. He has successfully represented both unions and individual employees in a number of forums including but not limited to contract negotiations and arbitration, grievances, complaints before the State Board of Labor Relations, the National Labor Relations Board, Superior Court, and the Workers’ Compensation Commission. Attorney Chester finds great satisfaction in promoting and defending the rights of working people throughout the state of Connecticut.
