Our Speaker is Stephen Carney, Deputy Solicitor General.

Stephen Carney

Stephen Carney is a Deputy Solicitor General in the Ohio Attorney General’s Office, in the Appeals Unit of the Solicitor General’s Section. He frequently briefs and argues cases in the Ohio Supreme Court, where he has argued over 40 cases and has briefed many more. He also briefs and argues in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, and has written many briefs in the U.S. Supreme Court. His U.S. Supreme Court briefs have won several Best Brief Awards from the National Association of Attorneys General. He has argued some of the State’s biggest cases in the last 20 years, on topics such as the constitutionality of charter schools, partial-birth abortion, nude dancing, concealed carry of handguns, free speech, wrongful imprisonment, and an advocacy group’s standing to challenge JobsOhio. He joined the Attorney General’s Office in 1997, after spending three years in general litigation at Jones Day in Columbus. Mr. Carney is a graduate of Xavier University and the University of Cincinnati College of Law.
